COMMUNICATION

It takes practice to hone the skills of communication which provides us the opportunity to improve other aspects and areas of life. With focus and practice we can master the ability to express ourselves clearly and avoid misunderstanding and miscommunication.

Verbal communication is challenging. Sometimes when I think I know exactly what I want to say, my attention is drawn into what the other person said, I get distracted and lose my train of thought. There are times I've become  frustrated thinking afterwards "I should have said this, been more clear, stayed on point, etc ".  Communicating  is an art and a skill that requires attention to detail for its mastery.  Great communication happens when we articulate clearly, allow  others to speak and be heard and share a balanced back and forth of expression.  It is something I work on through writing as well as conversations.  I believe if we want to live in a harmony we need to work on communicating from the heart in truth and love, mindfully.

Listening is a profound component of skilled communication. To hear, understand, and take time to reiterate whats been said is a necessary part of clear and meaningful  conversations.  As we seek clarity by repeating what we heard we circumvent assumptions, which when unchecked lead us to presume we understand what the other person meant -  but probably did not say.  A calm demeanor serves to maintain civility which lends itself to clarity because the absence of extreme emotion makes space for all parties to be validated and heard.

In verbal conversation intonation is clear and obvious, however it is not so when we post a comment or shoot a text. Tone can be and often is easily misunderstand. Being mindful of the way in which we communicate through Social Media is paramount because so many suffer at the misunderstood words posted to Twitter, Text messages, FB, Instagram etc.  Unnecessary pain and suffering can be avoided by pausing and re-reading,  and inserting ourselves into the other persons place.  Practicing mindfulness in written communication is not only important but our responsibility.

So I encourage you to sit with your conversations for one or two days.. Listen carefully, choose your words wisely and open in a way that you would love for them to open to you...  Maybe Magic will show up... who knows?
