Progress Not Perfection

Upon reflection at this time of year as a family member who, like countless others, were greatly impacted on September 11 by tragic loss brings to light how each day we live the perfection of imperfection. Although saddened by a past we cannot change we  embrace the pain of yesterday and make the best of today so our hearts can heal and some element of  joy can be re-established.

Thankfully the power to positively influence and change the lives of many is as much ours as those who choose its’ opposite, acts of destruction and hate.  As a formidable people we rise above the darkest of times, help one another, and live life on purpose in ways that far surpass any idea we’d once perceived.  We focus on what we can do to contribute to the betterment of our society, impacting generations to come, and put our suffering aside to make our world a better one. We strive to inspire each other flowing with the grace of unconditional love supporting family, friends and strangers alike. We resign ourselves to a path of acceptance, finding joy in an imperfect life in an imperfect world. We open to inspiration and do that which potentially uplifts and helps others. Some of us have changed careers, started foundations and created countless avenues to make life more meaningful, more joy filled.  We are a people who are rooted in love, who, at our very core, are willing to serve, teach and nourish those in need who cross our path.

Every day the opportunity to make a difference is knocking at our door. Maybe today all we have to give is a smile or a kind word, hold a door or let someone pass that looks rushed.  Each and every effort significantly matters whether great or small. We never know how important one single act of kindness is to the recipient. The potential to change the climate of a strangers day may hang in the balance of our action and we could be the person who makes that difference.  We may not be equipped to save the world or impact it on a grand scale in this moment, but we can use today as an opportunity to bring joy or some level of delight to another.  Truly it is in every small and  simple gesture that the greatest blessings manifest. While perfection is unattainable, progress isn’t, and as we say yes to life we are empowered and enriched with joy. Sharing our joy leaves an imprint on the heart of life and all those we encounter.

In contrast to our expectations, dreams and desires our imperfect life challenges us  to unwrap, uncover and embrace hidden gifts borne in our darkest moments. As the past looms endlessly in our memory, we live with the hope of tomorrow giving rise to a broader version of life and self.

Empowering tip of the day:  Bring your best self to the start of every day. Let your light shine on the path of those you meet and give them reason to remember you with a smile. You have the potential to make someone’s day and be blessed in the process.

This article is dedicated to my cousin Amy O’ Doherty who perished on 9/11. She was in the infancy of her career at Cantor Fitzgerald, a life path of amazing gifts awaited her. She wore a tireless smile and brightened every space she occupied.  She is loved forever by her mother, Geraldine Davie and her sister Maura O’Doherty Lee, along with the entire Davie and O’Doherty families. Amy you live always in our hearts, we will never forget.....

The decision is ultimately ours to live in Pity or Power... what will it be? We can only be in one.

Life is a journey, not a destination.

Feel free to post your questions and comments. I look forward to hearing from you. Remember we are all on this journey growing and learning as we go, so your input will bring enlightenment to many.

In Power, Peace & Love,
Mary Ann

Make Today Great..... .
